The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and assembling mechanical equipment used in the galvanising process, including pre-treatment tanks, overhead cranes, jigs, bath handling systems, and associated plant infrastructure.
This role requires hands-on experience, strong mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to safe work practices in a heavy industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
Perform fitting, assembly, maintenance, and repair work on plant equipment such as:
Pre-treatment and pickling tanks
Overhead cranes and hoists
Conveyor systems and dip lines
Dross removal and fume extraction systems
Carry out regular inspections to ensure safe and efficient operation of all equipment
Diagnose faults and implement effective mechanical solutions with minimal downtime
Read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and work instructions
Install, align, and maintain pumps, valves, pipework, and structural fixtures
Assist with jigging and de-jigging equipment where required to support production
Work closely with production teams to ensure equipment reliability and plant performance
Maintain accurate maintenance records and follow work order procedures
Adhere strictly to all site safety protocols, including PPE requirements and confined space entry procedures
Participate in shutdowns, plant upgrades, and continuous improvement activities
Required Skills & Experience
Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter, ideally in a heavy industrial or galvanising environment
Trade qualification or equivalent in Fitting & Machining / Mechanical Fitting
Strong understanding of mechanical systems, bearings, shafts, and hydraulics/pneumatics
Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment
Experience working in corrosive or high-temperature environments advantageous
Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
Physically fit and able to work in hot, wet, and sometimes confined conditions
Commitment to safe work practices and teamwork
Preferred Skills (Not Essential)
Overhead crane or forklift licence
Basic welding and fabrication skills (MIG or stick)
Confined space and working at heights certification
Previous experience in hot dip galvanising or metal finishing industries
Working Conditions
Heavy industrial environment with exposure to heat, steam, and chemical baths
Required use of PPE, including gloves, eye protection, respirators, and protective clothing
Standing, bending, lifting, and working in varying temperatures
Shift work, overtime, or weekend work may be required based on production schedules
Additional Requirements
Candidates must have taken or be prepared to take the UKVI IELTS test, which is an essential requirement for visa and employment eligibility purposes.
